NATURE-INSPIRED PET PHOTOGRAPHY

Serving the Indianapolis, Indiana Area

  • What if my dog isn't great with commands? Do they have to know sit and stay?
No training? No problem! One of the perks of hiring a pet-specific photographer is that I have oodles of experience with capturing beautiful images of pets with all levels of training. Also, some of my favorite portraits are of dogs standing up. I have a lot of tricks (and treats) in my bag to grab their attention for that split second I capture an image.
  • What if my dog can't be off leash?
Believe it or not, 95% of the dogs that I photograph are ON leash. Leashes keep your best friend safe and are important for following local laws at many parks. Is your pet wonderful off leash? Don't be surprised if I suggest that we still use a leash during your session. Leashes are super helpful for guiding your doggy-supermodel to the right location and pose during the session. Leashes will be removed from your final images using the wizardry of Photoshop.
  • Can my dog wear a harness or gentle leader?
Harnesses hide a lot of your dog's chest, which makes it very difficult to accurately remove in post-production. Gentle leaders can leave yucky shadows or pull on your dog’s skin, so those are also a challenge. If your dog normally wears one of these, feel free to use it while traveling to your session location, but please also bring a flat collar for the actual photoshoot. Martingale collars are also acceptable.
  • What if my dog is super reactive to other dogs or people?
I have a dog that is highly reactive, so I completely understand! The world can be a scary place for us all sometimes. If your dog fits this temperament, we will choose a location that best suits their needs. I have some excellent locations that receive very little dog or foot traffic.
  • My dog is extremely energetic! How can you get photos of him?
My camera's shutter speed goes all the way up to 1/8000 of a second, which is fast enough to capture even the most energetic dog! Your dog won't have to sit, stay or behave for hours (or even minutes) on end. I know how to work with “active” models and will deliver beautiful images, jam-packed with your pup's personality.
  • Can I be in the images with my dog?
100%! I would love to document the wonderful connection between you and your dog. Capturing a traditional portrait of you both smiling at the camera is wonderful, but isn't the only option. Many of my clients particularly love candid images of the moments you share. If you’re camera shy like I am, we can still create some lovely, creative images that tell the story of your relationship. Please just remember to trust me. You won't need to purchase any images that you don’t adore.
  • What time will our photo session be?
The most magical, gorgeous light for photography happens during the “golden hour”. That means we will schedule your session during the first two or last two hours of daylight. Depending on the location of your session, we will determine if the light is better suited for the morning or evening so we can take advantage of the lovely low-angle light.
  • How do I choose a location?
It’s a big decision! Don't worry - you have me to guide you with plenty of recommendations. We will discuss what vibe you are looking for during your session-planning call, along with any special needs your dog might have (mobility challenges, anxiety, etc.). We will also discuss your availability (e.g. mornings only). Keeping all of that in mind, we’ll determine the perfect location for your custom session.
  • What if the weather doesn't cooperate?
Mother Nature definitely has a mind of her own! If the weather doesn't cooperate for your session date, we will simply reschedule. Your session retainer fee will transfer over to our new session date.
  • Who can come to the session?
Everyone who lives in your household (with four legs or two) is welcome to participate in our session. However, to minimize distractions, I ask that only those who will be in or assisting with the photos come along. If you’re interested in a session with your dog’s best playmate or your extended family, I’d be happy to provide a custom quote.
  • Do you photograph pets other than dogs?
Big or small - I love photographing all subjects of the animal kingdom! While the majority of my clients are of the canine variety, I do photograph feline models and am happy to photograph animals of any kind.
